Dragon's Dogma 2 Faced Framerate Issues Due to Overly Complex NPC AI
Earlier this week, Capcom released a new update for Dragon's Dogma 2 aimed at addressing the game's noted framerate difficulties. Within the game's settings, players can now opt to prioritize graphics or performance, with the latter option designed to mitigate the stuttering framerates that have marred the gameplay experience. According to Capcom, these issues stem from the intensive demands placed on the CPU by the game's non-player characters (NPCs), who appear to be "thinking too much."
In a revealing interview with Famitsu, which was translated and verified independently, Capcom's development team shed light on the technical challenges they faced. They explained that the game's CPU resources are extensively used to process the complex behaviors of each NPC, including their interactions with the game’s physics system. This issue becomes particularly acute in crowded scenes, such as those in bustling town settings, where the multitude of NPCs results in significant CPU load and subsequently impacts the framerate.
Despite the option to reduce graphics quality, such as lowering resolution, Capcom found that these measures did little to alleviate the problem because the CPU, not the GPU, was the primary bottleneck. In response, the development team has adjusted the processing of NPC thoughts and the execution order of various processes through ongoing updates. These changes have improved performance, enabling the game to run at approximately 50 to 60 fps on platforms like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, with Steam also offering settings to ease the processing load.
While the framerate issues have been a source of frustration for players, the complex behavior of NPCs is a crucial feature of Dragon's Dogma 2. Each NPC follows a unique schedule, engages in specific activities, and maintains relationships with others, enhancing the game's dynamic and immersive world. The Pawns, in particular, are intricately programmed to adapt to the player's actions, learn new combat tactics, provide advice, lead to treasures, and occasionally lead to player mishaps.
Dragon's Dogma 2 was given an 8/10 in our review, praised as "a strange and wonderful action-RPG that bolsters the original’s strengths without addressing its weaknesses."
